Team sports, water sports, golfing, hiking, and hunting - recreational activities for all ages.

South Hill is home to both Centennial Park (E. Danville St./15 acres) and Parker Park (accessible via Halifax St. or Raleigh Ave./55acres).

Centennial Park hosts numerous annual festivals and has two modern tennis courts and two covered pavilions with restrooms.  It is also a green area for kids to run and play and has a shaded playground with a wide variety of climbing equipment, swings, sliding boards, etc.  Veterans Memorial Parks is adjacent to Centennial Park.

Parker Park is a beautiful state of the art sports facility featuring nine lighted baseball/softball fields which may be converted to soccer fields, an indoor training facility for baseball/softball, three basketball courts, a sand volleyball court, walking trails/areas, picnic areas and two concession areas with restrooms.  Parker Park frequently hosts district, state and national baseball/softball tournaments and has hosted several World Series tournaments.

The county, civic and church groups offer public recreational programs.  The South Hill YMCA offers programs for all ages.

The South Hill Country Club (434) 757-7558 features a nine-hole, private equity course offering 2,900 yards of golf from the longest tees.  The facilities also include a swimming pool, tennis courts and a club house.  The Woodfield Club also features a swimming pool, tennis courts and a club house.

South Hill is partnering with its neighbors to develop the Tobacco Heritage Trail, a 150 mile hiking, cycling, horseback trail extending through five counties.

A full range of water sports is available in the area with some 1,150 miles of shoreline on Buggs Island Lake, the largest lake in Virginia, and Lake Gaston.  Millions of tourists flock to the two lakes annually.  Vast fishing and regional and national bass fishing tournaments are held on them.

Hunting is a staple of life here.  With the plentiful forests, fertile fields, and bountiful lakes and streams, the area offers a rich habitat for a number of popular wild game species including:  whitetail deer, black bear, turkey, fox, rabbit, squirrel, geese and duck.

Whittle's Mill

Whittles MillWhittles Mill - click photo to enlargeOn August 5, 1963, the Town purchased the Whittles Mill Dam and adjacent property on both the Mecklenburg and Lunenburg sides of the Meherrin River.

The property, located off Highway 47, consists of 34½ acres and an old stone dam built circa 1805.  It is among the oldest man made structures standing in our area and one of the most beautiful small river sites in the Southern United States.

South Hill is making a major effort to preserve and improve the historic site by making it more visitor friendly and including put-in/out-take facilities for canoe and kayak enthusiasts.  It features a sandy beach and calm waters and is also a great area for fishing or camping.

More information about the mill can be found in Max B. Crowder's wonderful book Whittle's Mill; An American History.

Visit the South Hill Farmers Market every Saturday, rain or shine, April through October.

Operating hours are 8am to 12pm; held at 105 W. Danville Street in the South Hill Market Square public parking lot at the intersection of Mecklenburg Avenue and Danville Street in the heart of downtown South Hill.

Since the opening of the South Hill Farmers Market in 2005, vendors have found this to be a very profitable and enjoyable way of selling their goods. Along with local growers, homemade crafters and bakers are welcome.  The Market Square is also available for community fundraisers and special events.

Vendor space $5 per day, 10x10 space; covers allotted Market hours.
Spaces allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Season passes are available.
Sign-up days are Monday-Thursday; cutoff time 4:00pm Thursday.
Vendors are responsible for providing tables, equipment, shelter and displays for their merchandise, and for the collection and removal of all refuse generated from sales at their space.

The Town of South Hill thanks all the vendors whose wonderful products make our Farmers Market successful.  We have received many excellent comments regarding the Market.

We take pride in the fact that all items sold at the Market are grown, baked or crafted by local vendors, guaranteeing the freshness of the products and allowing customers the opportunity to talk to the actual producers.

Come and be a part of this exciting opportunity.  The location is ideal, the cost is minimal, and the potential is enormous!

Contact Anna Cratch at 434/447-3191 to reserve a vendor space.  View our Downloads Link for helpful resources.  The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) also has a very useful Farmers Market Resource Page you may wish to visit.  Please contact the VDACS at 540/562-3641 with further regulation questions.
