Organized in 1934, the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department has 37 active firefighters and 10 vehicles. These vehicles include Tankers, Pumpers (including foam), a 100’ Aerial Scope, HAZMAT unit, support vehicle with cascade system, and command vehicle.

The SHVFD is a charter member of the Southside Virginia Volunteer Firefighters Association. In the last 31 years, the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded the trophy as Best All-Around Fire Department for 26 of those years in regional competition. They have a fire insurance rating of class 4/4y.

South Hill Rescue Squad

The Southside Rescue Squad has 42 members, serving 355 square miles and a population of 10,000 people. It was the first Rescue Squad in Virginia to be accredited to teach EMT and paramedic classes.

The Squad provides advanced life support emergency medical care and transport to VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital. Critical care transfer is also provided to the local helipad for transport to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Duke University Hospital in Durham, and UNC Health Care facilities based in Chapel Hill.

Police Protection

State Police, South Hill Police, and Sheriff's Deputies receiving awards24-hour police protection is provided by the South Hill Police Department, Virginia State Police, and Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

Information regarding licenses, permits, applications and forms can also be obtained by calling the Town Hall at (434) 447-3191.  Forms can be printed out, filled in and mailed or faxed to the Town Hall, or may be presented in person [Fax (434) 447-5064].

All new construction, renovations, or additions to existing structures require a building permit.

All businesses (except contractors and peddlers) must have a definite place of business (can be their residence) within the corporate limits of South Hill to be issued a business license. If they are not located within South Hill, a license cannot be obtained.  The fee varies upon type of business.

A permit for yard sales is required (no fee and only four per year).  They may only be held on residential property.

Town offices and facilities are closed, and some services may be curtailed, on the following holidays:

Whenever any of such days falls on Saturday, the Friday next preceding such day, or whenever any of such days falls on Sunday, the Monday next following such day, and any day so appointed by the Governor of the Commonwealth or the President of the United States, shall be a legal holiday as to the transaction of all business.
